C-V2X & Edge Computing: The Winning Technologies for Connected Vehicles and Autonomous Driving

In February 2018, the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) hosted a workshop in Munich as a discussion platform for the wide range of stakeholders advocating for the evolution of cloud computing in the automotive sector and beyond.

Drivers for the multi-stakeholder workshop

Edge computing is one of the key supporting technologies for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) services for connected vechicles and autonomous driving (AD) by offering cloud computing capabilities at the edge of the network. This premise is backed by several demonstrated cellular-vehicle-to-everthing (C-V2X) use case trials that have already proven the potential of edge computing for real C-V2X scenarios.

Bringing together industry stakeholders from car original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), OEM suppliers, road and mobile network operators and edge computing technology vendors, the workshop covered various facets and perspectives on edge computing, illustrating its potential to further expand the competitiveness of C-V2X as the technology of choice for C-ITS (cellular-based intelligent transport system).

Stakeholders shared their thinking and experiences with this enabling technology as welll as use cases, requirements and common approaches on how to best use networks and edge for C-V2X.

Main takeaways

Participating companies agreed on a common way forward led by the 5GAA.

  • Edge Computing has a great value proposition for C-V2X and its evolution, as it further increases the competitiveness of C-V2X and its infrastructure component (LTE-Uu) over the alternative ITS-G5 technology.
  • Technical discussions are to continue in the 5GAA working groups; further collaboration with standardisation bodies is encouraged to continue and expand.
  • Future workshops similar to this one can be considered, e.g. again collocated with a future 5GAA meeting.

Work on mobile edge computing continues within 5GAA working groups with outputs such as white papers and studies coupled with contributions to 5G standardisation, e.g. via 3GPP and the 5G User event series with fellow MRPs (5G-IA, 5G-ACIA, PSCE). Find all relevent publications and updates here
