Overview of the 5G-VICTORI Trial on Digital Mobility: Public Safety, Security and Infotainment

This 2021 trial is aimed at improving citizen comfort, safety and security on public transport (buses) and infotainment services. The municipality of Alba Iulia provides high-resolution media streaming and social media services over 5G through its Command and Control Centre server coupled with AI automated and real-time threat detection with the network allocating the appropriate QoS for emergency services.

The trial comprises a Facility Services Web Portal; an Orchestrator, managing the use case service slices and resources,the 5G-EVE French Cluster ONAP; IaaS, multitenant in Alba Iulia and Bucharest, based on  the ETSI MANO framework; physical network Infrastructure: radio, computing servers and transmission networks; Mobile Edge Computing and analytics application for threat detection; a Command and Control Center, initiating the emergency procedures; 5G RAN and Core components (5G Non-Standalone Option3x), software components for 5G services communication.

The trial deployment and configuration integrates the 5G-EVE solution framework, three clusters are involved in experiment deployment: French cluster for ONAP orchestration connected through IPsec to Bucharest; Bucharest 5G experimentation cluster; the Municipality's cluster facility for use case demonstration. The 5G service is instantiated through 5G-EVE framework with the traffic sent to the municipality's command and control. The trial is providing infotainment services for citizens and public safety service over 5G, end-to-end deployment and instantiation, immediate service setup time, in-life management and automation.

It involved partners from Orange (Romania and France), EURECOM and municipality of Alba Iulia.

5G Empowerment

The simultaneous 5G service slice deployment demonstrated the creation and implementation of an end-to-end communication service over a 5G infrastructure for Digital Mobility, assuring, mainly through the access radio, slice resource prioritisation and the service KPIs (bandwidth, latency). Previous generation technologies were not capable of ensuring  the necessary traffic characteristics and network service control, as without this performance, the trial would not be possible. 5G enables new use cases that legacy technologies cannot support, bringing significant business benefits, rapid time to market delivery, reduced infrastructure cost and improved service level management.

5G Key performance Indicators

The trial measured the following KPI values:

  • E2E latency and prioritised uplink data traffic for public safety services: 20ms RTT and 10Mbps UL.
  • Network service instantiation: 15s RAN and Core service instantiation.
  • Command and Control (C&C) Centre real-time data visualisation.
