5G for Automotive

Today the automotive sector is one of the most crucial sectors for Europe’s economic growth and prosperity, contributing 4% of EU's GDP and creating employment for over 12 million people. The global automotive sector is on the verge major technology-driven transformations that will disrupt the sector in many ways. Nowadays, consumer are increasingly having expectations go beyond vehicle quality and reliability. The rapid development of ICTs is equipping vehicles with increased levels of automation and communications capabilities towards the next frontier of the automotive revolution, whereby, increasingly automated vehicles will gradually replace some or all of the human driving tasks.

How Global5G.org and Automotive

As the future vehicle models attain higher-levels of automation (so called, Level 5 Full Automation) the more stringent are the demands on the quality of connectivity to vehicle in terms of capacity, latency, reliability and so on. To that end, the enhanced mobile broadband, as well as, ultra-reliability and low-latency performance targeted by 5G systems could provide vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity performance required for fully cooperative, connected and automated mobility.

As an umbrella term, V2X encompassed a range of connectivity scenarios that includes short-range Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-(Roadway) Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) connectivity, as well as, wide-area Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) connectivity scenarios, all of which would benefit from 5G enhancements. As a result automotive is the most cited sector amongst verticals and use cases when considering the upgrade of current systems to 5G studies.

What will Global5G.org do concretely in relation to this specific vertical

In the latter part of the next decade, autonomous vehicles are expected to become a common feature in some regions. With current 5G-development timeline the next few years will be a valuable opportunity for demonstrating, testing and validating 5G innovation in the automotive space. The Global5G project will be monitoring some of the early 5G automotive use cases and trials from publicly funded research projects, private sector and other multinational collaborative initiatives.
