5G User Event Series: Highlights and Impact Report 2021

5G is bringing a wide range of benefits across industry verticals, from automotive to broadcast media, energy, manufacturing, maritime, public safety and transport. To capture these benefits and ensure they feed into 3GPP standardisation, in early 2019 a sub-set of 3GPP Market Representation Partners (MRPs) got together with top experts in 3GPP with a view to encouraging the community to embrace verticals, optimally capture end-user requirements and support contributions to the standardisation process through a member-based and consensus-driven approach.

Since then, the 5G-Infrastructure Association (5G-IA), the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), the 5G Alliance for Connected Industry and Automation (5G-ACIA) and Public Safety Communications Europe (PSCE) have hosted two physical 5G user workshops and seven virtual events, zooming in on opportunities to contribute to subsequent 3GPP releases with a focus on common and priority requirements.

Our Achievements in Numbers

  • 1743 registrants for 7 virtual events.
  • 1332 attendees.
  • 50 countries worldwide.
  • 18 associations onboarded (representing verticals, SMEs and telecom).
  • 1647 responses to 21 polls on participant viewpoints and plans.
  • Well over 3700 views of the event recordings.

About the Impact Report

This report gives a summary of the main highlights from each of the seven virtual events, spanning:

  • 3GPP Releases 16 and 17 for Industry Verticals (May 2020)
  • 5G Spectrum for Industry Verticals (June 2020)
  • 5G for Healthcare, Social Care and Public Safety (July 2020)
  • 3GPP Release 18 for Industry Verticals (November 2020)
  • Edge Computing: Viewpoints from Industry Verticals (April 2021)
  • 3GPP Standardisation on Edge Computing (April 2021)
  • RAN Release 18 for Industry Verticals (June 2021)

A Word of Thanks and Looking Ahead

In early July 2021, the 5G Media Action Group (5G-MAG) joined us on our journey, helping us to build on our successes as we turn our attention to Release 18 and what lies beyond 5G. Our focus will continue to be on the needs and interests of our community across the globe, championing international standards as we push the envelope within and beyond the telecommunications industry.

Our goal ahead is to continue shaping plans around real commercial and market-facing needs as champions of industry verticals alongside our supporters, always aiming for concrete outcomes by helping verticals form partnerships with the telecom industry so market rollouts are viable, sustainable and standards-based.

We extend our thanks to all our expert panellists, enthusiastic participants and everyone who has helped us reach a truly global audience. Special thanks are owed to
